Karen Gaskill: 'Overlap'

Single channel video on monitor
2'30 (looped)

Overlap, by Manchester-based artist Karen Gaskill, re-represents time within its existing cycle, exploring the occurence of discontinuity and liminality. It consists of footage captured over a 12-hour period, with the camera set to record two seconds of every 30. This shortened narrative collapses existing time boundaries, generating a new duration - one that expresses time as something infinitely elastic.

In the use of video to reassemble this cycle, prior and future movements are implied at every moment through the continuous unfolding of imagery. The edit technique draws on early notions of duration in its deconstruction of the image into multiple perspectives, thereby offering a series of views which would normally exist sequentially over a period of time.
