Awardwinners 200818 November 2008 The award-winning films for AURORA 2008 were announced at the AURORA Awards on Sunday 16 November. The jury, which comprised Edwin Carels (Belgium); Sukhdev Sandhu (UK); Laure Prouvost (UK) and Michael Robinson (USA) made three awards and one special mention, as follows: Best Music Video Of the video, juror Sukhdev Sandhu said: "At once blissed-out and unsettling, childlike and droll, Jessie Stead's video is a strange perfumed garden that captures the essence of Flesh Unitard's idiosyncratic song, drawing out its seductive eeriness successfully enough to sustain and merit multiple viewings." Best Film Juror Michael Robinson, who presented the award, explained that the film was selected "For its poetic efficiency, inquisitive drive and commanding elegance." The Dick Arnall Award Jury chair Edwin Carels explained: "Infection Transmission Event/Cloudy November is Paul Abott’s debut single screen video work. As a bleak, laboratory experiment it addresses the questions whether or where the omnipresent flow of data turns into information, or on the contrary affects our communication and perception skills like a virus. Working in the vein of Wittgenstein’s and Burrough’s investigations into the enigma of language, it challenges the viewer with its voluntarily unpleasant yet formally intruiging plasticity; and also questions preconceived notions of animation and audio-visual grammar in a larger sense. As such, he is exploring the potential of his medium, as advocated by the late Dick Arnall." Special Mention Ben Rivers' film was awarded a Special Mention "For its masterful weaving of form and content, its purposeful balance of doom and hope, and its capacity to deliver somewhere other." (Michael Robinson) Cash awards of £1,000 were made to all three main award-winners. |
