![]() Jem Cohen: StrayJem Cohen, known primarily as a filmmaker, has quietly taken still photographs for many years, but has rarely shown them. For AURORA 2009, he will present a selection of photographs from his circumnavigations: some black and white silver gelatin prints, but mostly original colour polaroids (a disappearing format whose final manufacturing runs were this year).
Although sometimes quite hallucinatory, the images are from the real world; fugitive glimpses in fugitive formats. If the the verb “to stray” is defined as “to digress or become diverted from the main subject,” Cohen’s show confirms that for him these wanderer’s glimpses – landscapes, portraits, often ignored details - are the main subject.
